During the 1960's Bedford trucks were a frequent sight on British roads and they were adapted to many different uses. This model was based on a long-wheelbase vehicle and incorporated a central hydraulic lift. The rear tailgate was top-hinged so it opened automatically when the tipper lifted.
The cab and chassis were two separate castings held together by a rivet at the front behind the bumper. The cab was fitted with windows and these were usually a pale amber colour although pale green examples are known. Both cab and chassis were painted red with silver trim on the grille, bumper and headlights. On each cab door there was usually a blue & yellow decal with an 'HRG' logo but sometimes these were omitted or only one was attached.
The long, bright yellow tipper body fitted onto the chassis at the rear with a crimped pin but the tailgate was attached by two top lugs at each corner. This was an efficient arrangement and most Bedford Tipper Trucks have kept their tailgates. On the underside of the tipper, just rear of the centre, the hydraulic lift was connected by a small bracket. This, and the twin hydraulic cylinders, were unpainted metal. Decals reading 'Ham River Grit Sand Ballast Shingle' in red letters were stuck to each side of the tipper on big flat panels.
The Bedford LWB Tipper did not change its red and yellow colours but there were two kinds of wheels fitted. The first were unpainted domed or spun metal wheels with treaded tyres and these were the most common. Later unpainted ridged metal wheels were used but still with treaded tyres.
Boxes for the LWB Tipper were the standard 'Budgie Models' issue (B1) but because production lasted up to 1966 it was also issued in the blue & white open-sided window packs wrapped in shrink-wrap (C2). In addition, it was occaisionally included in Budgie Gift Sets.
Examples of the Bedford LWB Tipper Truck are not hard to find in excellent condition but the last issue C2 box with the model still sealed inside is rare.
