Morestone 'Esso' Petrol Pump Series
No.20 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible
The last model in the Esso Petrol Pump Series, No.20 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible, was based on a 1957 American car noted for its low-slung styling and large 'shark fins' at each rear corner.
The Morestone model was issued late in 1957 so it was very up-to-date. The body casting included a strong windscreen frame and an open centre for the seats and driver which were part of the base.
In keeping with the image of the real car, No.20 Plymouth Belvedere was painted pink with silver trim on the front grille and headlights, and also on the front and rear bumpers and the logo symbol in the centre of the boot at the back.
A cream or white coloured version is also known to have been made, possibly when the Plymouth was re-issued in 1960 but this is very rare and there is no certainty that it was included in the Esso Series. It is worth noting that the pink colour has been known to fade in sunlight so pale versions of pink can be found.
The strongly-cast base with seats and driver (including steering wheel) was a rich red colour. Rivetted to the body at two points, it held the axles in recessed slots to enhance the low-slung look.
For the Plymouth, Morestone fitted chunky, unpainted metal wheels on flat-head & crimped axles.
Issued after the Garage Offer closed, No.20 Plymouth Belvedere was given an Esso box with a large number in a circle on the base flap. A Tanker Coupon was included inside.
Although one can find examples of the Plymouth, they are often playworn or chipped so mint models are scarce and fetch a premium. Boxes too are scarce.
After the Esso Series ended, the Plymouth Belvedere continued as No.20a until 1962. For details see the Budgie Miniatures No.20a Plymouth Belvedere page.
