Benbros Zebra Toys
107 (32) Daimler Ambulance
The Daimler Ambulance was a little out of date compared to other Zebra Toy models. It was based on an old-style vehicle from the 1950's and although well cast it had no new features like windows or side doors.
The body was a single casting with side windows, feature details and a raised cross. There were two opening metal doors at the rear. As with the real vehicle, it was painted cream including the doors with silver trim on the front grille, red trim on the side crosses, and the Zebra Toys trade-mark jewelled headlights at the front. On the roof above the windscreen a black decal with white 'Ambulance' was added.
The base section included the driver and interior of the model and extended to provide both bumpers with a representation of a bell at the front. It was painted glossy black inside and out and had a small number '107' beside the front axle with 'Daimler Ambulance', 'Zebra Toys' and 'Made in England' cast on the otherwise plain surface.
Benbros used the standard Zebra Toys metal wheels on the Ambulance which were unpainted and appear to have had a brass finish. The tyres were black treaded rubber. There were no other variations or updates to the Ambulance and unlike several other Zebra Toys it was not given coloured plastic wheels which may indicate that this was not a popular toy.
As with other models in the collection, the Daimler Ambulance had a black & white striped box with an illustration of the vehicle on both faces and the usual Zebra Toys emblem on each side. The orange end-flaps carried the number '32' along with a a simple 'Ambulance' model name.
Finding examples of the Daimler Ambulance is not easy and the box is very rare which makes this model one of the hardest to collect in the Zebra Toys range.
